Wearing tartan in the summer

Tartan is regretfully, at least on this side of the Atlantic, perceived as something worn around the holidays.

Of course, this would be a surprise to a great number of Scots. Sure, the cooler weather of Scotland means tartan trews can be worn with a tweed sport jacket — think a coatee — for much of the year. To put that into perspective, it was 64 degrees yesterday in Edinburgh and 84 degrees in Detroit.

One way tartan can be worn in the warmer months is a seasonal sport jacket. Think cotton or linen.

A good example is the one pictured below.

The linen sport jacket is from Lander Urquijo, the haberdashery with shops in both Madrid and Paris.

It could be worn dressed up with crisply pressed pants, a cutaway collar shirt and knit necktie or natty bowtie. For a more casual look, think denim jeans and suede loafers.

Worn either way, a tartan sport jacket in cotton or linen is a great addition to the wardrobe of any discerning gentleman.
