What to wear: The rugby shirt

The sartorial flexibility of a rugby shirt is perfect for a late-season trip to the farmers market — it’s pumpkin time after all — or a tailgate before the football game.

One of the best values is L.L. Bean’s rugby shirt, which comes in very preppy red and navy stripes ($59; available here).

And unlike other rugby shirts, the shirt has a plain front and lacks any fake crests, which gives it a much more authentic feel. The corduroy collar is also a nice detail that conveys ruggedness and durability.

From a styling standpoint, pair the rugby shirt with the American-made New England Gingham shirt ($119; available here) from L.L. Bean Signature. This makes for a neat look and nice alternative to wearing a merino wool or cashmere sweater.

Finish this Saturday look off with slim-fit jeans, suede chukka boots and a hoof pick belt.
