The $55 American-made shirt

Discerning gentlemen across the United States have never had it so great.

With dozens of internet-based shirtmakers — bespoke, made-to-measure, made-to-order and off-the-peg — there is no need to settle for a shirt from the shopping mall.

One of the brands gaining a big following is Everlane, which provided this correspondent with its light blue Oxford shirt.

While off-the-peg, Everlane has something that many others don’t offer: Made in America for $55.

Classically styled, it has a contemporary cut that is trim but not too slim. There are also genuine mother of pearl buttons — a deal virtually unheard of with off-the-peg let alone custom shirts at this price.

The cloth had a soft hand, which made it perfect for wearing with the crew-neck cashmere sweater also sold by Everlane.

The bottom line: Quality wise, Everlane meets all expectations. One area that does need improvement is sizing, as the sleeves were a tad too long and required alteration. Offering shirts in traditional neck-by-sleeve sizes would ensure the best fit and put Everlane in a position to claim the title of the perfect Saturday shirt.
